WINGS Birding Tours – Photo Gallery

Gambia

Birding will begin within the grounds of our hotel, with species such as… …Red-billed Hornbill… …Yellow-crowned Gonolek… …and White-crowned Robin-chat being easy to see (and photograph). Nearby at Abuko we should see Giant Kingfisher… …and Pied Kingfisher is common in most wetland habitats. We will check out a daytime roost for Verreaux’s Eagle Owl… …although Long-tailed Nightjar is more likely to be seen at dusk. Not far from our hotel we’ll encounter such superb species as Green Turaco… …Abyssinian Roller… …and Little Bee-eater. While the parasitus race of Black Kite (Yellow-billed Kite) should be seen… …other raptors could include Long-crested Eagle… …and Western Banded Snake Eagle. Any habitat can host Senegal Thick-knee… …and Western Reef Herons are regular… …but exploring the smaller creeks of the River Gambia will provide the best chance of the impressive Goliath Heron… …or majestic African Fish Eagle… …while Blue-breasted Kingfishers dot the mangroves. We’ll try for African Finfoot from Tendaba. …and any small pools and paddyfields could produce Painted Snipe… …or White-faced Whsitling-Ducks… …but of course the star of any tour to the Gambia has to be the stunning Egyptian Plover.
