India: The North

Ranthambhore, Bharatpur, Nainital and Corbett

Paul Holt’s Northern India is an amazing combination of natural abundance… …and new experiences… …with cultural wonders… …and of course spectacular birds. We stay in comfortable places… …some full of charm… …and others simpler, but in the middle of great national parks. Our transport is normally familiar and comfortable… …but includes open-topped trucks in some national parks,… …a fleet of jeeps in mountain towns,… …small boats on occasions… …and even a night train; here a view of the boy’s room. Meals vary from elegant… …to on-the-fly outdoor picnics. The scenery is wonderful and varied. The sun setting over Corbett National Park… …and stunning views across in the mountains. Birds range from the massive Tawny Fish Owl…. …to the camouflaged Blue-throated Barbet,… …the clearly pied Pied Bushchat,… …the rare Long-billed Thrush,… …the scarce and localized Red Spurfowl,… …the superb Siberian Rubythroat,… …and the elegant Indian Skimmer. There are plenty of mammals too; Spotted Deer,… …elusive Indian Gazelles,… …massive Asian Elephants,… …(sometimes) pensive Plains Grey Langurs,… …and of course we hope for Tiger. The prehistoric Indian Monitor is just one of the reptiles seen on tour. The Indian people, and their approach to life, are endlessly fascinating. Here a pilgrim carrying Ganges River water… …and here a thought-provoking sign. And like all trips, we hope to return home with at least a few lasting images… …particularly of one of these!
