WINGS Birding Tours – Photo Gallery

Indonesia: The Moluccas

The Moluccan islands of eastern Indonesia, known as Maluku in Indonesia, remain one of the world’s last great birding frontiers… the sheer diversity of birdlife is breathtaking… there is a reason this was the place where Alfred Russel Wallace first developed his theories of island biodiversity… These islands are living biological laboratories! Lying at the crossroads between Australia and Asia… we find a rich and diverse avifauna…. with a wonderful mix of species from both regions… Our journey takes us over sea… river… land… and air… We’ll explore the forests… …here we are looking for the Madanga on the island of Buru… and the seashores… amongst some stunning scenery… here some fishermen lay their nets… Although we will have plenty of early mornings… our amazing crew look after us in the field… And there is even more than just the birds. Beautiful endemic flora… and insects… a wasp, fierce yet beautiful and butterflies, here a stunning Jezebel… And, of course, Indonesia is a remarkable country… amazingly friendly people… surprising finds… and surprising… and beautiful scenery. But the birdlife… is undoubtedly the star of the show. Here the endemic Seram Oriole… the endemic Moluccan Flycatcher… the endemic Streak-breasted Jungle Flycatcher… the more widespread Moustached Treeswift… a cooperative Large-tailed Nightjar… the diminutive Flame-breasted Flowerpecker… Red-cheeked Parrot is widespread but always a great bird… the gorgeous Wallace’s Fruit-Dove is named for the famed naturalist… the Buru White-eye is another sought after endemic… while the Greater Coucal is more widespread… other creatures may distract us at times though! This is a fun and exciting tour.. here, we arrive on Boana to look for the monarch And taking the short boat trip to Kai Kecil And a very happy group!
