Chiclayo to Cajamarca

We’ll travel from the arid shrubland near Chiclayo… …to the humid Cloud Forest at Abra Patricia…  …twice crossing the impressive Marañon valley…. …and discovering in the process some of the most scenic places in  South America. A large number of Peruvian endemics are possible, including Chestnut-backed Thornbird… …lovely Yellow-faced Parrotlets (found only in the upper Marañon valley)… …and Koepche’s Screech-Owl, sometimes found on their day roost. We’ll be looking as well for very localized species such as the stunning Bar-winged Wood-wren restricted to ridge forests… …the brilliant Tumbes Tyrant, found only in dry forest in the northwest of Peru… …and the well-named Elegant Crescentchest. We expect to see around 40 species of hummingbird, including the near-mythical Marvelous Spatuletail… …and some recently described species such as  Long-whiskered Owlet. Besides the  birds, we should encounter mammals like Sechuran Fox… …Collared Peccary… …and Tayra, here enjoying the fruit feeders at Abra Patricia. The vegetation is wonderful as well, including unique cacti… …and splendid orchids. We’ll use several lodges located in the birding areas such as Chaparri… …and the famous Owlet Lodge at Abra Patricia We’ll travel through some rarely visited parts of Peru… …be exposed to interesting people… …stunning birds… …and truly unforgettable scenery.
